Elvis’ Honeymoon Hideaway hits the market

The sprawling mansion that served as the hideaway for Elvis and Priscilla Presley has hit the market for just $US 5.65 million ($SG 8.10 million).

The Presleys called the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home in Palm Springs, California, home for the first few days of their marriage, renting out the mansion for $US 21,000 in 1967.

Although he initially planned to use the home as the location of his wedding, he and Priscilla decided to tie the knot in Vegas instead after the media found out about his plans.

Complete with a spa, pool, multiple private terraces and spectacular mountain views, the Presleys spent four days honeymooning at the mansion, before Elvis had to leave for filming.

Hosting music icons isn’t the only claim to fame the mansion has though.

The house, designed by William Krisel in 1960, came with a futuristic design and modern amenities - including vacuum ports, an indoor kitchen grill, and wall-mounted radios - that made it ahead of its time and earned it the nickname ‘The House of Tomorrow’ in 1962 by Look Magazine.

In more recent years, the house has been branded as Elvis’ Honeymoon Hideaway and open to the public for tours.

Given its design features, it’s certainly a house you wouldn’t want to miss seeing.

Highlights include its spaceship-like winged roof, the stepped waterfall located at the centre of the house, carved-wood double-height entry doors, and a circular theme throughout.

The living room area boasts stacked stone walls, built-in seating, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a “futuristic steel beaker-shaped fireplace hood and floating hearth”, according to the listing.

The dining room area overlooks the living room from a raised platform and opens out to a terrace and the pool, while the kitchen boasts top-notch appliances and a circular centre island.

Each of the bedrooms comes with an ensuite, with two also featuring sprawling terraces and the main bedroom accessed via a grand staircase.

The home has been renovated in recent years, with many of its original architectural details being restored.

Images: Compass / Getty Images

France told to sell Mona Lisa to cover coronavirus losses

France should offset its financial losses from the coronavirus pandemic by selling Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece Mona Lisa for at least €50 billion, a tech CEO has suggested.

Stephane Distinguin, founder and CEO of tech company Fabernovel, told Usbek & Rica magazine that the country should “sell the family jewellery” to help deal with the “unfathomable” crisis.

“Day after day, we list the billions engulfed in this slump like children counting the fall of a stone into a well to measure its depth,” Distinguin said.

“We are still counting, and this crisis seems unfathomable.

“As an entrepreneur and a taxpayer, I know that these billions are not invented and that they will necessarily cost us. An obvious reflex is to sell off a valuable asset at the highest price possible, but one that is the least critical as possible to our future.”

Distinguin said France has “a lot of paintings”, which are “easy to move and therefore to hand over”.

He said: “In 2020, we have to get the money where it is. So sell family jewellery … The price is the crux of the matter and the main subject of controversy. The price has to be insane for the operation to make sense.”

The 46-year-old also suggested that the 16th century Italian Renaissance painting could be “tokenised” with a form of cryptocurrency, allowing it to be shared between countries around the world.

“It would be like a big global subscription,” he said. “Legally and technically, this solution would have many advantages: it would allow France and the Louvre to keep control of the painting.”

The International Monetary Fund expected France’s GDP to contract by 7.2 per cent in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. Many French tourism operators also fear the country will remain off-limits to international visitors this year.

Princess Mary and Prince Frederik blasted over deer hunt pictures

Princess Mary of Denmark and her husband Prince Frederik have been slammed by animal rights activists for their involvement in an annual hunting event that saw dozens of deer killed.

The Danish royal family celebrated the King’s Hunt at Gribskov forest on Wednesday and were then photographed outside the Fredensborg Palace standing before rows of deer carcasses.

Photos from the event show Princess Mary and Prince Frederik smiling and chatting with other people in the crowd in front of the slain deer. The prince could also be seen inspecting the slain ‘proceeds of the day’.

“This morning, the King’s Hunt was held in Gribskov, and this afternoon there was a game parade in front of Fredensborg Castle, where H.M. The Queen, the Crown Prince couple, and the participants of the hunt watched the proceeds of the day,” an Instagram post on the Danish royal family’s official account read.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DET DANSKE KONGEHUS (@detdanskekongehus) on Nov 20, 2019 at 11:40am PST

The royal pair has been criticised for setting “poor” example to their four children – Prince Christian, 14, Princess Isabella, 12, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, eight – by participating in the hunting parties.

Animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) told Yahoo Lifestyle that the couple’s support for “violent blood sport” may encourage violent behaviour in their children.

“There is nothing noble about shooting defenseless animals for fun,” a PETA spokesperson said.

“Given the now well-established link between cruelty to animals in childhood and violent behaviour in adulthood, not only is it insensitive for Prince Frederik and Princess Mary to teach their children that killing animals is acceptable, it’s also a poor parenting decision.

“Few people today view hunting as anything other than a violent blood sport, a cheap thrill at taking a life and a display of wanton power over the powerless. It is surely the parents’ responsibility to help children grow into compassionate leaders for their country, with respect for all living beings.”

Throughout the years Princess Mary has also copped backlash over her frequent use of real fur, including seal fur traditionally used in Greenland.

“Times have changed, and unless Danes wish to be viewed as callous and out of touch, they should start creating new traditions that celebrate compassion and replace those tired, cruelly produced furs with new eco-friendly and humane fabrics,” PETA said.

See the images here (warning: graphic).

Elvis: The life of the King

Humble beginnings

The King was not born into his later glory, being raised in a simple homestead in Tupelo, Mississippi. He was described as a 'loner' in school, and was told again and again that he was a terrible singer and would never make a career out of it.

But Presley kept playing, and kept listening, and eventually caught his break at 19 with a rendition of the classic blues song 'That's All Right'.

DEBUT ALBUM

Presley's eponymous debut album was released on March 23, 1956, and would come to define the new genre of 'rock and roll'. Preceded by the single 'Heartbreak Hotel', the album also featured one of Presley's most famous recordings – the classic 'Blue Suede Shoes'.

Elvis Presley sat atop the Billboard chart for 10 weeks, and marked the first time that a rock and roll album had achieved number one status.

Becoming a star

After the release of his album, Presley was courted by various variety television programs, including the ever-popular Ed Sullivan Show. His performance stylings received mixed reviews but the viewers kept tuning in, with a broadcast in September 1956 being watched by 60 million people – over 80 per cent of the total television audience.

Presley soon became a national celebrity across America, with his songs including a new backing track of screaming young fans.

The king hits hollywood

Presley had always had a dream of becoming a film star like his heroes James Dean and Marlon Brando. Although he never quite reached their heights, his time in Hollywood in the 60's produced classics such as Jailhouse Rock, King Creole and Viva Las Vegas.

However, many of the films Presley was signed for were medium budget musical comedies which he eventually tired of, disappointed that his hopes of serious dramatic roles were never realised.

Elvis gets hitched

Presley was conscripted into the US Army in 1958, and after basic training he was posted in Friedberg, Germany where he met 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu.

He quickly fell for her, and after a lengthy period persuading her parents, in 1963 she moved into his Graceland home in Memphis. Eventually (with some apparent reluctance on Presley's part) they married in 1966.

A tumultuous marriage with affairs on both sides led to a separation six years later, but the two remained on good terms until Elvis' death.

The rock and roll lifestyle

After skyrocketing to celebrity status, Presley's life became closely followed by the tabloids in the 60's and early 70's.

From numerous affairs with his Hollywood co-stars to meeting President Nixon in 1970, his frenetic lifestyle became fuelled by prescription drugs and amphetamines that would eventually take their toll.

Presley died on August 16, 1977, just before he was scheduled to fly out of Memphis to begin yet another tour.

A lasting impact

You'd be hard pressed to find a single person in the Western world who hasn't heard of Elvis Presley. But beyond the modern horde of impersonators, Presley's most important legacy was without a doubt his music.

Before Presley, rock and roll barely existed - but with his unprecedented popularity it became a central feature of youth culture in the 1950's and 60's.

Despite his failing health in his later years, Presley still toured until quite literally the day he died, and this tenacity is one of the reasons there are tributes to The King of Rock and Roll across America and the world.

Written by Jamie Feggans.
